The leader of the new Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, said Parliament Speaker Alban Bagbin would declare the NPP side as the majority in Parliament on Friday.
It comes after National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Haruna Iddrisu told a press conference today that regardless of the fact that the only independent candidate for parliament, Andrew Asiamah Amoah has officially turned down aligned with the NPP side, the NPP does not have a majority in the House.
However, during a counter-press briefing, NPP’s Mensah Bonsu explained that the question of who constitutes a majority in the House should not be the subject of litigation between the two parties in Parliament because rather, it is a case of the side with the most digits.
As such, if MP Fomena maintains his position to sit with the NPP side of the House, then the NPP will have more numbers than the NDC, therefore, will be declared as the majority in Parliament.
“These are initial steps, I want to believe that when the chips fall into place tomorrow [Friday], we will be able to overcome that, ”he said.
Although Mr Iddrisu maintains that there is no majority or minority in the 8th Legislature, with both the NPP and NDC having equal seats at 137, lawmaker Suame is also optimistic that the adding Mr. Asiamah to their numbers gives them majority power in Parliament.
This, he said, will ensure that the NPP caucus will chair all committees except the two designated for the “minority” in Parliament.
Mensah Bonsu also praised Haruna Iddrisu’s statement indicating the willingness of NDC MPs to sit on the left side of the Speaker, which is the traditional seat of the minority in Parliament.
