The January transfer window is open, giving Liverpool the option of adding to their squad or offloading players.
The Reds have been hit hard by injuries this season – especially in defense – but boss Jurgen Klopp has said it will be difficult to strengthen his ranks this month.
“A fan can look at him and think ‘they need a center-back and the other team has a good one so get them involved.” I understand that but my job is not that, ” he said recently.
“My job is really to make the players we have here as strong as possible to deal with the most difficult situation you can imagine – three senior center-backs and they’re all injured.
“We can’t sort it out now on the transfer market. The club is trying what it can. But if they can’t, we have to do what we’ve done so far, even if everyone thinks “now they don’t stand a chance”.
“We have to become stronger as a group, stay more united and fight against the world. Fight the circumstances. Stick with everything you’ve got and make this season the most special season ever. ”
Another thing clubs can do, however, is negotiate pre-contract deals with players outside their own league who come into the last six months of their current deals, to sign them on free transfers this summer.
Could this be an option Liverpool could consider using? If so, here are four players they could contact …
David Alaba
Austria international Alaba has turned down the offer of a new contract at Bayern Munich, which means he is almost certain to leave at the end of this season, barring a dramatic turn of events.
The defender, who can operate either at center-back or left-back, has reportedly made demands that Bayern are unwilling to meet.
Unsurprisingly, the 28-year-old is already reportedly attracting interest from a range of clubs, including Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid.
The Reds are hoping Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez will be fit again next season – but with questions about Joel Matip’s fitness, Alaba could give Klopp another option.
Julian Draxler
Germany international Draxler joined Paris Saint-Germain from Wolfsburg in 2017 for € 42million (£ 37million).
It hasn’t quite worked out for the winger, who has abandoned the pecking order on the French side and is out of contract at the end of this season.
He told Bild: “Last season didn’t go well at all. Not sportingly and also because of my injuries. Then the season ended because of the coronavirus. It was definitely a season to forget for me. ”
Could the 27-year-old make a fresh start in the Premier League?
Memphis depay
The Dutch forward has been a bit of a flop at Manchester United – but has rebuilt his career in a certain style with Lyon.
He has scored 65 goals and provided 48 assists in 157 appearances for the French club since leaving Old Trafford to join them in 2017.
Depay’s form for club and country has reportedly sparked interest from both PSG and Barcelona.
Maybe his compatriot Virgil van Dijk could say a word if Liverpool wanted to join the race? Not that they probably should.
Either way, Depay has a sideline as a rapper and has already checked Van Dijk’s name in a track – saying he wanted the defender to sign for United rather than the Reds!

Sergio ramos
Really experienced, yes. Out of contract at Real Madrid this summer, yes. Are you coming to Liverpool? No.
Just because the Reds can talk to Ramos doesn’t mean they should!
The 34-year-old has enjoyed a brilliant career with the La Liga giants, of course, but talks about a new deal are said to be at an impasse.
The Spaniard has been linked with Tottenham, having previously worked with Jose Mourinho in Madrid, but he is unlikely to be short of potential suitors if he leaves the Bernabeu.
It is by no means a long term solution for Klopp.
