French court condemns courier Deliveroo who refused Jewish meals

A French court sentenced a 19-year-old Deliveroo courier to four months in prison for discrimination after refusing to deliver meals to Jewish restaurants.

Two restaurateurs in the city of Strasbourg, in eastern France, filed a complaint last week after alleging the courier canceled delivery orders after learning it was “Israeli food.”

One of the owners told the court that the man said, “I don’t deliver to the Jews.”

“French law prohibits any form of discrimination. Everyone in this country must be respected,” said Judge Bertrand Gautier during the trial.

The judge added that the courier, an Algerian who entered France on a since-expired tourist visa, had fraudulently used the Deliveroo codes of an associate and had his products transferred to the account of a third party.

Deportation order at the end of the sentence

The suspect was ordered to leave the country after serving his four-month sentence, an expulsion confirmed in a tweet from Home Secretary Gerald Darmanin.

Speaking through an interpreter, the courier admitted to canceling orders but denied saying it would not deliver to Jews.

The Israelite Consistory of the Bas-Rhin department also lodged a complaint against Deliveroo, who pledged to take immediate action if the allegations were confirmed.

“We are relieved by the conclusion of this investigation, which has identified the person who committed these heinous acts, thanks to close cooperation between Deliveroo and the police,” said Melvina Sarfati El Grably, Director General of the company for France, in a statement.
