The judge in charge of the murder case of the late Abuakwa North MP (MP), Mr. JB Danquah-Adu, expressed concern over the refusal of legal aid department counsel to represent the defendant, Daniel Asiedu.
A High Court judge, Judge Lydia Osei Marfo, said yesterday that despite writing to the Legal Aid Department asking for the accused’s lawyer, the court had received no response; therefore, no lawyer had been appointed to represent the accused, a situation which blocks the progress of the case.
Previous lawyer
In November last year, the accused’s attorney, Mr. Augustine Obour, who had been defending him on an ex gratia basis for nearly five years, decided to withdraw his services after a video that went viral showed Asiedu confessing to having killed Mr. Danquah. -Adu.
According to Mr. Obour, he found it very difficult to defend the accused when he (Asiedu) had confessed to the whole world, including the jurors who will decide his fate, of his murderous act.
Legal aid
Subsequently, the court, in December 2020, wrote to the Legal Aid Department requesting that a defense lawyer be appointed for the accused along with his accomplice, but nothing has yet been heard.
Judge Marfo, who raised the issue with a lawyer from Legal Aid who came to represent an accused in another murder case, said: “I don’t know why no one wants to touch this case. There is nothing fancy, come and do your best. “
She therefore encouraged the legal aid lawyer to consider representing Asiedu in this case.
The case was adjourned until Thursday, February 11.
Not guilty
Asiedu and a certain Vincent Bosso have been charged with conspiracy to commit theft.
Meanwhile, Asiedu was also separately charged with murder.
Both have pleaded not guilty to the offenses.
Murder
Mr. Danquah-Adu was assassinated at his Shiashie residence in Accra on February 9, 2016.
This is the case with the accusation that Asiedu and Bosso were planning to embark on a frenzy of theft, but Bosso changed his mind and returned home.
The prosecution said Asiedu went to Shiashie and chose the MP’s house to steal.
According to the prosecution, during his search for objects to steal, Asiedu made a noise which woke the deputy.
The prosecution said a fight ensued between the two, leading Asiedu to stab the MP in the neck and chest and kill him in the process.
