Previews from DC Comics show Superman’s powers starting to fail him as the Man of Steel adventures continue in Action Comics # 1030.

Warning: contains spoilers for Action Comics # 1030!

Superman is one of DC’s strongest characters. Kal-El is noticeably faster than a fastball, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings with a single bound. Yet in the previews of his next adventures in Action comics # 1030Superman’s powers are about to change – and not for the better – as the Man of Steel could lose a step.

The Kryptonian powers of the Man of Tomorrow are rarely rivaled by his fellow heroes and villains in the DC Comics universe. Superman’s powers come from the yellow sun, which grants him super strength, speed, reflexes, stamina, heat vision, x-ray vision, super hearing, flight, super -breathing, and more. He’s called Superman for good reason. Kal-El has only a few weaknesses, including Kryptonite and magic. The longtime Justice Leaguer is pretty much invulnerable, and has fought just about every major threat, big and small, across the cosmos … at least he has so far.

In the next “Warworld Rising” arc that comes out of the events of Dark Nights: Death Metal, Superman will begin to feel something to change with his powers. Glimpses indicate that he will struggle to take down creatures that emerge from the Breach as threats like Mongul and other powerful aliens planning attacks with Warworld battleships. It is not known if the events that changed the Death Metal universe diminished Superman’s powers, but it seems something is impacting his usually unbeatable abilities. • “Warworld Rising” starts here! A new chapter in Superman’s life begins as the challenges of Dark Nights: Death Metal make Clark Kent feel … a change in his powers. Is it possible that Metropolis Marvel is losing a step? His efforts to eliminate the creatures of the Breach would suggest it! If he is to continue protecting the inhabitants of Earth, he will have to adapt – especially with threats like Mongul waiting to launch their biggest attacks on Earth yet. That’s right, these are Warworld battleships just outside of our orbit, and they’re heading straight for us!

Action comics # 1038 will also include a Backup Story featuring Wildstorm’s Authority’s Midnighter, written by Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad, with works by Michael Avon Oeming. It’s unusual to see the bright and hopeful Superman paired with a sinister, gritty killer like Midnighter, and the couple may portend a major downfall for Superman as the man of tomorrow faces new limits and perhaps must- even be calling on unexpected allies.

How will Superman adjust to his powers that are starting to wear off? It will be fascinating to see how far Kal-El’s powers have slipped and how long it will affect him, especially considering that Future state has opened up a possible future where he is exiled from Earth, no longer trusted as the hero of Metropolis. There is little doubt Superman may still be a hero with weaker abilities, but can he stop Mongul and the Warworld battleships from causing major destruction? Readers will know when Action comics # 1038 by DC Comics is available in comic book stores and online on April 13, 2020.
