The Central Regional Office of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has destroyed quantities of unhealthy products to protect public health and safety in the capital Cape Coast.

2.3 tonnes of destroyed items valued at ¢ 214,000.00 included drugs, food, cosmetics, household chemicals and other items.

The products have been seized from FDA operational areas, including pharmacies, markets and retail stores, thanks to routine surveillance throughout the region for the past seven months.

Mr. John Odai-Tettey, central regional director of the FDA, told dailymailgh.com that the move was part of measures to protect the health and safety of consumers.

Mr. Odai-Tettey pledged the FDA’s determination to step up its market surveillance and inspections to drastically reduce the trafficking or sale of items not regulated by the Authority in order to protect the health of all consumers. He said education and awareness raising with stakeholders is underway to enable operators to turn their unhealthy products over to the FDA for safe disposal.

He therefore urged outlets, distributors, warehouse operators, among others, to hand over unhealthy products to the FDA for safe disposal, and that they would cause unnecessary harm to consumers and break the law. they didn’t.

He also called on consumers to be bold in denouncing those who sell such products by reporting them to the Authority for rapid action.

“It’s okay if someone cuts the cost of the product, but it needs to be looked at thoroughly to make sure it’s in English and the validity of the product is intact,” the boss said from the FDA.

The action, according to the FDA, complies with the 2012 Public Health Act, ACT 851.
