The National People’s Convention (PNC) has asked President Akufo-Addo to appoint more women during his second term.

A statement signed by the party’s general secretary, Janet Nabla, observed that during President Akufo-Addo’s first term, women were under-represented in almost all areas of his appointments, including; Ministers, deputies, MMDCE, directors, ambassadors, members of the council.

Citing the example of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who ensured equal gender representation in his cabinet, Nabla insisted that President Akufo-Addo do the same and appoint at least 50% of women in his office.

According to her, this will show Ghanaian women that the constant emphasis on ‘we care about women and children’ is not just lip service, but something achievable.

“According to statistics from the Election Commission, more women registered and voted in the 2020 elections than men and, therefore, should not be pushed into backbench MPs when it comes to appointments.

“The president who happens to be a human rights lawyer should be guided by the constitution of Ghana in his appointments, especially the guiding principles of state policy Article 35 (6b) of a constitution of 1992 which insists that a gender perspective must be adopted in recruitment or appointment. ,” she said.

The Secretary-General then added: “The days of promises are over and women are now trying to give birth.
