The president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, said there was “no plan B” for the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Games.

The event organizers said Sky Sports News last week they remained determined to hold the flagship event this summer and had not discussed another postponement – a view endorsed by Bach.

The delayed Olympics, due to start on July 23, face dwindling public support in Japan amid a surge in coronavirus cases across the world.

“We have no reason at this time to believe that the Tokyo Olympics will not open on July 23 at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium,” Bach said Kyodo News.

The IOC said last year that it would not delay the Games beyond 2021.

Japan recently saw an increase in Covid-19 rates with many parts of the country in a state of emergency, but organizers “are unwilling to see the Games behind closed doors.”

Tokyo 2020 spokesperson Masa Takaya said Sky Sports News the Games Organizing Committee will closely monitor how other sports have started their seasons in Japan over the coming weeks to determine how spectators can be greeted.

“In an ideal world, the Games should take place in a party atmosphere, made up of spectators and that is what we want to achieve,” he said.

GB team chef de mission Mark England said last week he remained “extremely confident” that the Tokyo Olympics will be held this year, although they will be different due to the continued impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
