Jan. 21 (UPI) – Tommaso Ciampa and Timothy Thatcher went to war inside the Fight Pit during the WWE NXT Main Event.
The Fight Pit is Thatcher’s specialty and is a modified steel cage with a small catwalk located at the top. The match can only be won by KO or by submission.
Ciampa and Thatcher started the brutal game on the sidewalk on Wednesday before finally leading their battle in the ring.
Ciampa executed a low blow which was used to escape a dead hold. Ciampa was also able to play Willow’s Bell and land Fairytale Ending, but that still wasn’t enough.
Ciampa found himself trapped inside the cage, which Thatcher took advantage of by placing his rival in a modified stretch silencer. Ciampa was forced to pat due to the grip applied to his surgically repaired knee, giving Thatcher the big win.
Also on WWE NXT, the very first Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament was started by Hall of Fame member Beth Phoenix, who introduced the participants.
Phoenix spoke about how NXT has been at the forefront of the evolution of women in professional wrestling and noted how stars like Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, Charlotte Flair, Bayley and many more made their debuts with the yellow mark. and gold.
Phoenix thanked the fans for their support of the women’s wrestling and presented the tournament opener between Kacey Catanzaro and Kayden Carter against Toni Storm and Mercedes Martinez.
Martinez dominated the fight but was knocked out by her rival, NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai. The champion grabbed Martinez from the ring apron and threw her into the announcer’s office, pulling her out of the match.
Catanzaro and Carter wasted no time with Catanzaro performing an impressive, Twisting Senton on the top rope to secure the victory and advance into the tournament.
NXT Champion Finn Balor met with NXT Regal General Manager and said he ultimately wanted to face Pete Dunne, but only after taking care of Dunne’s friends, NXT Tag Team Champions Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch.
Regal said Balor can take on Lorcan and Burch next week if he finds himself a team mate.
Balor, who said he has no friends, approached rival Kyle O’Reilly of The Undisputed Era with the offer. Balor recently defended his title for the second time against O’Reilly in a winning effort.
O’Reilly accepted the offer, making the game official.
Other WWE NXT moments included Leon Ruff and Kushida defeating North American Champion Johnny Gargano and Austin Theory to qualify for the Men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament; Karrion Kross defeating Ashante “Thee” Adonis; Lucha House Party defeating Imperium to advance in the tournament; and Bronson Reed defeating Tyler Rust.
