Kenya’s Tourism Minister Najib Balala has defended the decision to appoint British model Naomi Campbell as the country’s international tourism ambassador.

At a public event, Mr Balala admitted that many Kenyans wondered why Hollywood actress Lupita Nyong’o was not chosen for the job.

He said Ms. Nyong’o had been inaccessible for five years.

The Oscar-winning Kenyan actress has been nominated by many Kenyans on social media as the perfect international ambassador.

Mr Balala said Ms Campbell has taken on the pro bono role and the government is working on details on how to use its influence to promote tourism, local media report.
