The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has expressed serious concerns about the surge in Covid-19 cases in the country.
“The recent peaks of Covid-19 in Ghana with 391 new cases bringing the total number of active cases to 2,413 and 361 deaths as well as the report of the new strain in the country should be of serious concern to all Ghanaians at this stage The Commission said in a statement seen by JoyNews.
According to the Commission, the number of reported deaths is alarming and therefore requires the immediate and sustained attention of Ghanaians.
Citizens who perceive the virus to be a hoax are also warned to be aware because Covid-19 is no respect for anyone.
The National Commission for Civic Education joins previous calls by other relevant institutions on the need to adopt the necessary security measures to prevent the pandemic from spreading.
In a statement dated Friday January 22, the Commission said: ‘The point is that more and more people are dying every day from the Covid-19 virus and it cannot be business as usual. This is all the more reason why the NCCE is making a passionate appeal to every Ghanaian to urgently take personal responsibility for protecting our security in these unusual times.
“The severity of the reported cases and the lethal nature of the new strain of Covid-19 places a greater burden on every citizen to observe the more stringent precautionary measures proposed by the Ghana Health Service, the Ministry of Health and the Government to contain the situation. “
Compulsory wearing of masks, social or physical distancing, washing hands with soap under running water, frequent use of an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, according to the Commission, will help reduce the risk of contraction and to stop the spread of Covid-19.
Here again, the Commission urged people wherever they are, be it at funerals, weddings, markets, bus stations, among others, to respect safety instructions.
Now that schools are in full session, the Commission explained that stakeholders are required to ensure the safety of their students.
In addition, the NCCE also urges “operators of transport unions, schools, ‘chop bar’ / restaurants, markets, faith-based organizations, event planners, recreation and entertainment centers to institute and insist on strict observance of security measures ”during daily activities.
The Commission, however, claims that failure to comply with these measures, in particular the wearing of nasal masks, justifies specific sanctions, as stated in EI 164 (No 10), under Article 6 of Law 1012 .
Those found guilty will be charged with one to five thousand penalty units, the equivalent of GH12,000.00 and GH60,000.00 gold or a prison term of four to ten years or both.
Meanwhile, the Commission is urging citizens who are showing signs and symptoms of Covid-19 to reach the 112 hotline for immediate assistance.
