A 15-year-old boy is in a coma after being severely beaten in a Parisian neighborhood last week. The incident sparked outrage across France and abroad, with sports stars and celebrities expressing outrage at the attack and support for the victim.
A video shared on social media shows the boy, identified only as Yuriy, being attacked by a mob of hooded men, who repeatedly hit him with a bat and then kicked him while that he was lying on the ground, in the Javel district in the 15th arrondissement of Paris. .
Yuriy was walking home from school with a group of friends when they were attacked, his mother Nataliya Kruchenyk told news channel BFMTV. The others managed to escape, but Yuriy fell and was left alone as the mob continued to beat him.
Police have opened an investigation into an attempted murder.
“They put him in a fire engine to take him to the hospital when I arrived,” Kruchenyk told BFMTV. “He was in horrible condition. They broke his skull, they broke his arm, a finger, his shoulder and his ribs.
Kruchenyk called on witnesses to come forward so “that no child has to go through what he has suffered”.
Cautious optimism
“Yuriy has shown signs of consciousness at the hospital, but he is very agitated. Doctors say it’s normal, ”Kruchenyk said Le Figaro Daily. “He is still on a ventilator and could not speak. But doctors are now cautiously optimistic. ”
French sports stars and celebrities have taken to social media to express their outrage at the attack and their support for Yuriy.

Rachida Dati, right-wing mayor of the 7th arrondissement, which borders the 15th, was re-elected last year on a security platform focused on the resurgence of crime.
Expressing support for Yuriy and his family, Dati tweeted: “This violence comes from a feeling of impunity. This is the balance sheet of the left at the town hall of Paris, “which has been led by the Socialists since 2001.
“We need a stronger police presence”, the mayor of the 15th arrondissement, also of the right-wing Les Républicains party, told CNEWS television station.
