The demo reaches the renewal of a call in Volta

Police in the Volta region have said they cannot provide security for the protest against the reappointment of Dr Archibald Letsa as Volta regional minister.

Police say although they have the capacity to keep the peace in the region, the upsurge in COVID-19 in the country and in the region in particular has led to increased enforcement of Covid-19 security protocols.

To that end, the protest which police say is being undertaken by “an unknown group, Volta NPP Grassroots for Justice” on Monday January 25, 2021 “will endanger public health and safety”.

“In view of the above, the command has decided to promote public health and safety,” noted a statement issued by Sergeant Prince Dogbatse, public affairs officer of the Volta Regional Police Command.

He therefore underlined that “the demonstration planned ENOUGH THIS IS ENOUGH in Ho was not sanctioned by the command and all must take note and be warned of the consequences of non-compliance.

Police say the region has registered 106 active cases with two deaths in the space of two weeks, mostly in Ho, Hohoe, North Tongu and Ketu North. Hence the command determined to support other key stakeholders in the containment of the pandemic in order to guarantee public health and safety and not to facilitate activities that could increase the spread and endanger lives.

Sgt Dogbatse therefore urged the public to continue to adhere to Covid-19 protocols: proper wearing of face / nasal masks, social distancing, regular hand washing and hand disinfection.

Meanwhile, Mawuli Amenuveve, who claims to be the coordinator of the Volta NPP Grassroots for Justice; said DGN online, the protest was proceeding because it was their right to express their dissatisfaction, especially when they notified the police.

He further noted that the police should simply be informed according to the law and not determine whether or not the demonstration can take place.
