Harry Potter live-action series ‘Mentioned on HBO’

A live-action Harry Potter TV series is being discussed at HBO Max, sources told the Hollywood Reporter.

Executives at the streaming company are said to be in talks with writers, although no writers or actors are currently attached to a project.

In a statement to the publication, HBO Max and Warner Bros. said, “There is no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform.”

In 2016, NBCUniversal signed a seven-year rights agreement with Warner Bros. Domestic TV Distribution that included broadcast, cable and streaming rights in the United States to the Wizarding World franchise. The deal, which expires in April 2025, includes digital initiatives as well as theme park content and events. The deal also means that Warners executives had to strike a side deal that allowed all Harry Potter features to air briefly on HBO Max when the service launched last May.

The films will return to NBCUniversal’s new streamer Peacock on a date yet to be confirmed.

Rowling’s agent Neil Blair has yet to comment on the Hollywood Reporter story.
