The chief of the ambulance service in Walewale, North East region, Moses Atampugre Ayamga, apologized to the public for the inability of the service to respond to a fatal road accident that occurred this dawn in Nasia in which more than 10 lives have been lost.
The vehicle that was traveling from Kumasi to Bawku with 45 passengers on board, according to the driver, Tanko Ibrahim, crashed on the Nasia Bridge after losing control while trying to dodge a herd of cattle.
The accident allegedly took place around 3 a.m., but there was no ambulance for the rapid evacuation of the victims to the hospital.
The victims were then transported in a police patrol van nearly two hours after the crash after the Walewale ambulance service did not respond to distress calls from the scene.
In an interview with Eliasu Tanko of JoyNews, Mr Ayamga explained that the ambulance had been out of service for almost a week due to faulty brakes.
“It’s not that we deliberately refused to attend the accident or that the car was in service.
“And we deliberately took it out of service, as you can see, we’re still at the station, it was because of the bad brakes,” he revealed.
Meanwhile, police have confirmed the death of another person, bringing the death toll to 11, while nearly 20 others are still being treated in Walewale and Tamale.
Security services were also able to clear the road and vehicle traffic on the Tamale – Bolga highway resumed.
