The late Former President Jerry John Rawlings with John Dramani Mahama The late Former President Jerry John Rawlings with John Dramani Mahama

And a man in his day plays many roles.

You stepped onto the political scene in Ghana like a colossus and played many roles. Your role in the political drama has left a lasting legacy for our nation.

No man is perfect, and “as it is written, there is no one righteous, not even one” (Romans 3:10). And yet the sum of your role in Ghanaian history will be remembered.

Your role in bringing peace and stability to the ECOWAS sub-region, especially the civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone, is recognized and celebrated.

Your leadership during the most difficult decade in Ghana’s history has led to significant reforms that have created the political stability and economic growth that we now consider to be quite normal.

Your signature enacting the Constitution of 1992 gave birth to the most enduring Democratic Republic Ghana has known in all of its historic existence. Ghana thanks you for this.

The decentralized local government system based on the concept of the District Assembly is also a lasting legacy of your management in the political space of Ghana.

Your contribution to African success together with other progressive African leaders resulted in the end of apartheid in the South, resulted in the end of apartheid and the swearing-in of Nelson Mandela as the first black chair.

Your penchant for saying it as it is without regard to political sensibilities has earned you the nickname “Mr. Boom”.

Proud son of the Volta region, you gave Ghana another chance and a new lease of life under the 4th Republic. In this lifelong pursuit of truth, honesty, and accountability, you have continually given your soul, thoughts, heart, and all of your energy.

Last year, during the celebration of the December 31st anniversary of Winneba, you were in a good mood. None of us who were with you that day knew that we would be celebrating the next anniversary of the revolution without you. As the founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), your death leaves a huge void that would be difficult to fill.

No one can match your political astuteness, wit, and charisma. For those of us comrades you have left behind, it is time to close ranks and work collectively to ensure the unity and survival of your NDC party as a vehicle that grounds your memory and legacy for posterity.

“Boss” – you may be gone, but your memory will continue to inspire countless generations of Ghanaians to challenge the status quo and use their nonconformity to spur societal progress.

You have been and remain the soldier in a perpetual and restless quest for freedom and justice. Flt Lt L. Rawlings, AFRC President. President of the PNDC, leader of the revolution, 1? President of the 4th Republic of Ghana, rest in eternal peace.
