Executive Director of the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), Joshua Amponsem calls on world leaders to empower young people on climate change adaptation by introducing compulsory climate change education in schools.
He made the call during the 2021 climate adaptation webinar hosted by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
Summit goals include strengthening adaptation ambition, where Joshua Amponsem highlighted the need to increase investments for young people in the Global South where adaptation is most needed.
“I speak to you today, on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of young people brought together by the GCA to produce a ‘Youth Call to Action’, because while we must continue to accelerate progress towards a net zero world, young people, especially young women and those from indigenous communities are already feeling the effects of climate change.
“Our ‘Call to Action’ shows that we want to play our part in building a resilient future, but we need your support to; Empower us through compulsory climate change education, equip us with skills and training for adaptive green jobs and fund us as we develop innovative solutions to adapt to our future, ”said Joshua Amponsem.
The Executive Director further urged world leaders and institutional officials from IMF, ADB, EU Commission, among others, to urgently take action and show commitment to protect security. livelihoods and environment for the next generation.
“By the time someone my age sits where you are now, it will be too late. So now, right here, your commitments will determine whether young people on the front lines become a climate migrant or a climate leader in the next extreme weather event! So please act now, ”he added.
Ahead of Monday’s high-level opening session, Joshua Amponsem led the global youth climate community to deliver a set of key recommendations for adaptation actions that had been developed through a series of consultations with young people. from all parts of the world.
Joshua Amponsem, the Ghanaian youth climate activist, led the global youth consultations on adaptation which have now developed into a “ Global Youth Call to Action ” and passed on to Ban Ki-moon , 8th Secretary General of the United Nations and President of the World Center on Adaptation, famous Dutch footballer Arjen Robben, Minister Cora van Neiuvenhuizen of the Netherlands and HRH Princess Djigma of Burkina Faso, and Professor Patrick Verkooijen, CEO of Global Center on Adaptation.
About the Climate Adaptation Summit
The two-day summit marked a pivotal moment in the climate adaptation movement.
The summit also sought to forge solutions and tools by mobilizing resources to fuel a transformation of climate resilience within the global economy, high-end solutions to tackle the challenges of climate change and invest in strengthening capacities.
It also sought to help communities adapt by sharing the best international partnerships, national adaptation efforts, and innovative sub-national collaborative experiences to deliver the most effective results.
In addition, he hoped to adopt the Adaptation Agenda for Action which seeks to offer increased ambition, accelerated actions and tangible solutions to the problems of a warming world, showing how a climate resilient future can and will be realized.
