Skoda cuts shifts amid chip shortage

PRAGUE – Skoda has temporarily cut 16 shifts this week as its parent, the Volkswagen Group, deals with global chip shortages.

“Due to the lack of semiconductors in the entire VW Group supply chain, the company … is also facing a shortage of this particular component,” Skoda said Thursday. “On this basis, an adjustment of the automotive production flow cannot be ruled out.”

Automakers around the world are closing their assembly lines amid the chip shortage caused by the coronavirus crisis and competition from companies making consumer electronics goods.

The VW Group said chip supply bottlenecks would impact production at some of its German factories in February.

The automaker said on Wednesday it requested short-term work at its Wolfsburg auto plant on certain days of the month. It also planned to cut working hours at its component factories in Kassel and Brunswick in February as a precaution. Production at Emden, however, will not be affected, the company said.
