West Brom has contacted police after Romaine Sawyers suffered racist abuse online.
The 29-year-old midfielder received a racist message on social media during Tuesday’s 5-0 loss to Manchester City.
Sawyers was held responsible for City’s third goal as the struggling Baggies were hit at the Hawthorns.
A club statement read: “West Bromwich Albion contacted West Midlands Police today to report a racist message sent to Romaine Sawyers on social media.
“Everyone at the club is appalled by the heinous message that was sent during Tuesday’s Premier League game against Manchester City.
“The club have a proud history of dealing with all forms of discrimination and will assist authorities with their investigations, seeking the most severe legal sanction available, as well as a lifetime ban on Hawthorns for the individual responsible.
“Albion will provide Romaine with the necessary support at that time and continues his long-standing commitment to helping rid football of racism.
“There is no place for racism. Anywhere.”
West Brom director Sam Allardyce asked if the government is doing enough to try to root out online abuse.
“I’m not a social media man, I have no social media platform so I can only be told about that,” Allardyce said.
“But as for Romaine, we reported it to the proper authorities, but that leaves a big question as a country or government … is that enough?”
“You know, what steps will be taken? I would say the police are already very busy in this country with the pandemic.
“And to deal with such things, we could all do without.
“Certainly Romaine, everyone in the game and every black person across the country should not be subject to abuse on social media.”
