National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) Volta Regional Director Kenneth Kponor called on Ghanaians to save the Fourth Republican Constitution to immortalize former president Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings.
He said that Flt Lt Rawlings, who was the first President of the Fourth Republic, was a unifier, charismatic and above all enigmatic.
He gave birth to the fourth constitutional republic, saw it flourish where we find it now, a fledgling democracy toast many peers in Africa.
Mr Kponor, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said Rawlings displayed a charisma that obviously brought everyone together in nation-building processes.
“The last time I had a meeting with him was before the 2016 general election to consult him and he said, ‘I will only do the consultation if I have the opportunity to cook for you and that you eat. “
“After the meal he said, ‘Let the truth guide you and put the best interests of the nation first.
“I will always be remembered for his selflessness, kind heart, humility and disciplined nature,” Mr. Kponor said.
The diversity
The Volta Regional Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, Mr. David Normanyo, said the diversity of former President Rawlings has helped keep the peace in the country.
According to him, there have been civil wars in some countries in sub-Saharan Africa due to the diversity of ethnic groups, but since Flt Lt Rawlings was genuinely interested in all Ghanaians, he did not marginalize any ethnic group and that promoted and maintained the peace of the country. .
He added that young people should emulate former President Rawlings in terms of seeing the future and should work to achieve it regardless of setbacks.
Reverend Seth K. Mawutor, Volta Regional President of the Christian Council of Churches, questioned whether the attributes of the former president had been imbibed by the people of Ghana or if it was a futile exercise.
He said the attributes of probity, accountability, transparency and integrity should be taught at the school level as a sign of upholding its principles.
