Future State: Justice League # 1 confirms that Justice League Dark’s most terrifying powerhouse isn’t Etrigan, he’s another DC supernatural hero.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Future State: Justice League # 1 story “Propheties”, by Ram V, Marcio Takara, Marcelo Maiolo and Rob Leigh, on sale now.

In the annals of DC history, it is safe to say that Etrigan the demon is the most terrifying hero in Justice League Dark. Trapped in Jason Blood’s body, the demon was linked to the human by Merlin as he tried to be forgiven in penance for his bloody past. He’s a demonic power, filled with hellfire and a passion for murder, but Jason also has added value for his knowledge gained over the centuries.

This makes it a dangerous combo for supernatural enemies, but in the Future State: Justice League Back-up on Justice League Dark, Ragman easily supplanted Etrigan as the group’s resident terrifying power.

Rory Regan inherited the Ragman costume from his father, Gerry, but it got out of hand. The cloak was hungry for souls, but Rory will have nothing to do with it anymore because he gets lost in it. Now, Zatanna and Detective Chimp, Etrigan’s new host, arrive at Rory’s workshop as they want to stop the hunters and knights of Merlin, hoping Rory will help with the relics they’ve discovered. They still believe in the Resistance, although Zauriel and many other magical users are going extinct around the world. Still, they think Rory has a role to play, even though he’s in denial.

Rory admits to selling charms from Constantine and other wizards for a stealth spell, but that’s about it. He really doesn’t want to become a mystical rebel as that will attract hunters. Eventually these forces come for Rory anyway, and Etrigan cannot fight his master’s soldiers due to his bond. However, he can power the cloak, which Zatanna desperately needs help with. Fortunately, Etrigan can summon souls from hell, and a violent giant, in particular, helps transform Ragman into a titan with a thirst for blood.

This is Svari, the Butcher of Harfsrfjord, a Viking slayer twice the size of hunters. This turns Rory into the greatest and baddest Ragman of all time, and he roars and slaughters his enemies in a way that is reminiscent of Etrigan at his most absolutely brutal. It’s pure, shameless rage that scares Zee and Bobo a bit, until a lucid Rory emerges on the other side.

After the mayhem, they teleport to Vegas to figure out what Constantine is doing while hiding, and it’s clear that even Rory had no idea what kind of creature he could become. Luckily for everyone involved, there didn’t seem to be any side effects, so Rory may just have found a lasting way to unleash Ragman’s power.
