Doctor Strange’s nemesis has just destroyed some of Marvel’s most powerful cosmic entities, including Galactus, Ego the Living Planet, and the Celestials.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for “Overture,” in Marvel # 4, by Alex Ross, Steve Darnall, Kurt Busiek, and Josh Johnson, on sale now.

Most of the time, Galactus and the Celestials are some of Marvel’s most powerful beings. Together, these cosmic entities should be able to destroy anyone who comes in their way. However, Doctor Strange’s nemesis Nightmare has just beaten down these cosmic beings with ease.

At the beginning of wonder # 4, by Alex Ross, Steve Darnall and Kurt Busiek, Nightmare is shown triumphant over several beings of cosmic power. Galactus, Surtur, Ego the Living Planet and three of the Celestials had just tried to stop Nightmare, who was harvesting the dreams of others in order to increase his power. As he towers over these vanquished cosmic titans, Nightmare pops one of Ego the Living Planet’s eyes out. All the while, Nightmare rejoices in his power, boasting that dreams have no limits. With the power of dreams, Nightmare managed to defeat many of Marvel’s most powerful beings.

Of course, none of this would have been possible if Nightmare hadn’t captured Doctor Strange. Nightmare used Strange’s magic to cast a world spell, which forced the inhabitants of Earth into an eternal sleep. During this period of sleep, Nightmare accumulated greater power through the dreams of the planet.

With everyone in a state of eternal sleep, Nightmare’s power is limitless. Dreams are a source of pure imagination, with limitless possibilities. Using the endless scenarios at its disposal, Nightmare can do it all. Nightmare would be powerful enough if it simply channeled the energy of a person’s temporary sleep. Ever since putting everyone on Earth into an endless state of rest, Nightmare has been channeling the power of billions of dreams for an indefinite period of time.

With the recurring dreams of billions at his disposal, there really is no limit to Nightmare’s power. This raw power is exemplified by Nightmare’s defeat against the Celestials, the ancient gods of Marvel. The Celestials created the Eternals, paved the way for human evolution, and even slaughtered entire planets before. Yet with the limitless power of Eternal Dreams, Nightmare sent the Celestials with ease. Galactus is also immensely powerful, devouring planets to survive and live through the creation of the universe. Surtur almost ended all existence with The Twilight Sword, and Ego nearly destroyed Earth on several occasions. Yet none of these beings could resist Nightmare’s power.

At the end of wonder # 4, Nightmare is up against more cosmic entities: Eternity, The Living Tribunal, Death, Lord Chaos, and Master Order. Despite all of these incredible forces gathered against him, Nightmare seems extremely confident that he will triumph. Much like he defeated the Celestials and Galactus, Nightmare believes he will beat the rest of Marvel’s cosmic pantheon.

Nightmare rejoices that he will transform from a simple conqueror into a deity. And at this rate, it’s likely that Nightmare will live up to his bragging rights. With the limitless possibilities of Earth’s eternal dreams at her disposal, enhanced by the power of Strange, Nightmare truly is a force to be reckoned with. If Nightmare wins, overcoming forces like death and all of eternity, nothing could stop the demon, as Doctor Strange has been reduced to gazing sideways in ghostly chains.

If Strange can find a way to break free, he just might find a way to dethrone Nightmare before destroying all of the cosmic powers the Marvel Universe has to offer.
