Ningo-Prampram MP (MP) Mr. Sam Nartey George said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s inability to secure justice for victims of Ayawaso West Wuogon’s partial election violence remains a great stain on his chair.
Sam George, who was among those physically assaulted that day, called the day’s incidents barbaric.
Today, January 31, 2021, marks exactly two years since that incident.
In a Facebook post from lawmaker Ningo-Prampram said he was accredited by the Election Commission (EC) to be there and should have been protected.
“Today, January 31, 2021 marks exactly two years since the sad and horrific incidents that characterized Ayawaso West Wuogon’s by-elections. I had just come home around this time two years ago.
“The Party assigned me the role of election observer and accredited by the Election Commission. The barbaric action of state security agents which resulted in the injuries and mutilations of innocent Ghanaian citizens remains a significant stain on Mr. Akuffo-Addo’s presidency. ”
However, he assured the victims of the incidents that justice would one day be served.
“Even after setting up a Commission and rejecting almost all of their findings in a white paper, the compensation for the eight injured citizens that was accepted by the government has still not been honored. None of the perpetrators have been sentenced to face justice. No matter how long it takes, justice will be served someday. ” What happened?
The NDC withdrew from the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election following a shootout at the polls.
Some masked men were caught on camera beating civilians who did not resist arrest. The men, fully armed, were also seen with a few police officers.
Some of these men suspected of being vigilantes of the ruling NPP party were seen in T-shirts with the inscription “NSC” which translates to the National Security Council headed by the President of the Republic.
The government then set up a committee to investigate the incident.
The Emile Short Commission of Inquiry was, among other things, mandated “to conduct a full, faithful and impartial investigation into the circumstances and establish the facts underlying the events and associated violence that took place during the Ayawaso by-election. West Wuogon. ”
The Commission heard testimony from key witnesses to the case, including Ningo Prampram MP Sam George; the National Security SWAT Team Commander, DSP Samuel Azugu; and then NDC parliamentary candidate Delali Kwasi Brempong.
The Commission interviewed over 20 other witnesses and persons of interest over a three-week period.
The committee after its investigation presented its report to the president.
The government, however, rejected some of the commission’s recommendations according to parts of the white paper.
The government said: “The report did not address the first and most critical of the Commission’s terms of reference.”
“Failure to do so prevents the government from fully accepting the commission’s findings,” the White Paper said.
