German luxury car maker Bayerische Motoren Werke AG has started purchasing aluminum made from solar energy to curb the growth of carbon dioxide emissions in its supply chain.
The Munich-based company said on Tuesday it had signed a triple-digit, million-euro deal with Emirates Global Aluminum PJSC to source 43,000 metric tonnes of low-emission metal in 2021 using energy of Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in the desert outside of Dubai. That amount will cover nearly half of the annual needs of the company’s light metal smelter in Landshut, Germany, where BMW makes body and transmission parts for its four car brands.
Solar-powered aluminum can reduce 2.5 million metric tonnes of CO2 emissions over the next ten years, or about 3% of BMW’s CO2 target for its supplier network, the company said. . The BMW Group, which includes Mini and Rolls-Royce cars, has pledged to reduce CO2 emissions in its supply chain by 20% by 2030, compared to 2019 levels.
Without action, BMW said its CO2 emissions per vehicle are expected to increase by more than a third by 2030. “The company not only wants to stop this trend, but also to reverse it,” he said. BMW is targeting a 20% reduction in CO2 per vehicle by 2030.
