The Ghana Judicial Services Staff Association (JUSAG) said attacks on the judiciary by social commentator Kevin Taylor not only affected the individual judges mentioned in his broadcasts, but also undermined the rule of law of the country.
This follows what the association calls “the relentless attacks on the judiciary by a Kelvin Taylor on his social media show dubbed” With All Due Respect-Loud Silence Media. ”
In a statement released by JUSAG and signed by its national president, Alex Nartey, on Tuesday, February 2, 2020, the association said: “The judiciary is a branch of the state established to resolve disputes in accordance with the law; impartially and effectively to all kinds of people without fear or favor, affection or ill will. Over the years, the judiciary has played this sanctified role within the framework of the precepts of the 1992 Constitution. It has existed for over 140 years.
JUSAG explained that “it exists first and foremost to play various support roles to ensure that the judiciary fulfills its constitutional mandate. The association has in the past expressed its contempt for the rise of inflammatory statements and irresponsible behavior by some individuals and their proteges on airwaves nationwide as well as on broader online social media platforms.
He noted that he “will not sit still and allow some selfish individuals to tarnish the image of the judicial service.”
According to JUSAG, Mr. Taylor “has used savage, unsubstantiated allegations in an attempt to disparage the image of the judicial service, which we deem unacceptable and reprehensible.”
Citing some of Mr Taylor’s unprintable allegations in addition to “other unsavory attacks on Judge Sophia AB Akuffo, Former Chief Justice Clemence J Honyenuga, Judge Eric Kyei Baffour,” the association called them “Totally unacceptable”.
He continued: “These comments, if not an attempt to incite hatred among the general public, or to ridicule the judiciary, are nonetheless a scourge for the administration of justice within the Republic of Ghana. Having a duty as Ghanaians to protect their mother Ghana, we would like to make it clear that the attacks on the judiciary not only affect the individual judges he mentions, but also undermine the rule of law that Ghana as a nation maintains.
The association therefore urged Ghanaians “not to subscribe to such unfounded allegations by individuals like Kelvin Taylor, who will bastardize our sacred institution in the pursuit of his personal interests. The principle has always been that “whoever alleges must prove.” “If a person has reason to doubt the integrity of a member judicial service, the best thing to do is to follow the procedure which will allow him to present evidence.”
He further called on all “and others to treat these unfounded allegations with the contempt they deserve.” Comments from unscrupulous people who don’t care, send Ghana into a state of anarchy in order to score cheap political points.
JUSAG also called on Mr. Taylor to “revise his modus operandi and do the right thing by presenting appropriate petitions to the appropriate statutory bodies in Ghana for inquiries. Anything below that is an affront to the rule of law, and the same must end immediately. ”
