CARE Ghana, a civil society organization, called on Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament and leaders, to reject the appointment of Mavis Hawa Koomson as Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

A statement signed by CARE Ghana Executive Secretary David Kumi Addo said the petition to reject Ms Koomson’s nomination or appointment was based on her “lack of credibility”, “violent tendencies” and “incompetence” .

According to the group, Ms. Koomson’s role as Minister for the Special Development Initiative, presented Parliament with a budget of GH ¢ 800,000.00 for the development of a website, which was outrageous.

The petition said that the “deceptive act” demonstrated indicated lack of credibility on his part and smacked of corruption which was detrimental to the nation’s development.

The statement said the “act of corruption” has also imposed untold suffering on Ghanaians, especially those living in depressed communities, depriving them of basic social amenities and development projects necessary to improve their living conditions. .

“His actions are clearly against the law and contrary to the behavior expected of a Minister of State. For this reason, she lost her credibility and public respect, thus preventing her from occupying a future ministerial post, ”the statement said.

Again, he said Ms. Koomson’s “frequent involvement in violent activity” was in flagrant violation of the code of conduct strictly observed by ministers of state and did not reflect the supposed behavior of a minister.

“For example, she admitted to firing sporadically in the air in public at one of the registration centers in Awutu Senya East constituency during the voter registration exercise, an act which resulted in Ghana. international embarrassment and undermined the public’s respect for her. a Mr. and the Initiative of the Ministry of Special Development.

“She would also have encouraged her vigilantes to attack anyone who crossed her path during the general election of December 7, 2020. This calls into question her ability to live in harmony and build a good working relationship with people.

The statement added that the ministerial candidate’s “violent disposition” would ostensibly deny her the opportunity to excel, thus, she would become a heavy responsibility for the state and the ministry.

According to the group, “the penchant for violence to mask her incompetence” clearly exposed her inability to focus on her core mandate at hand, which opened her to criticism and public ridicule, bringing the name into disrepute. of his ministry and government if approved. .

According to the statement, Ms. Koomson’s “poor performance” during her previous appointment as Minister of the Special Development Initiative “disqualified” her from becoming Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

“As Minister of Development, she has done very little in terms of development to alleviate the suffering of the masses. The poor implementation of the ‘One Village One Damn’ under the Special Development Initiative and its supervision of the construction of canoes instead of dams needed for irrigation and other agricultural activities during the dry season have worsened the plight of communities deprived of water.

She said her “incompetence” in this regard was a waste of taxpayer money as it could not be used for any purpose in these communities.

“We therefore believe that his approval to become Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture will come down to a square peg in a round hole because the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture is a dynamic and more demanding department. which requires individuals with the right attitude and competence to advance development progress, hence our call to reject his appointment.

The statement that serving in the high office of a Minister of State required “competence, credibility and sobriety at the very least, which Ms. Koomson had shown lacked when she had had the opportunity to. become minister of the Special Development Initiative ”.

“We therefore pray that, in the interests of good governance and the country, his appointment is totally rejected by this honorable commission. We humbly submit to your consideration.
