What is herbal medicine
President of the Ghanaian Association of Medical Herbalists (GAMH), Dr Anthony Mensah advised the people of Ghana not to rush for the Nibima plant, which has been approved by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) as a possible local remedy for the COVID -19 pandemic.
He said it could cause bodily harm to anyone who appropriated the plant in its raw form for self-medication.
Dr Anthony Mensah said: “We should not all rush to the Nibima factory because of the new information. Now we are applying chemicals to the plants and spraying weedkillers making it dangerous to take weeds straight from your garden ”.
Advising Ghanaians not to self-medicate when it comes to the use of herbal medicine, especially Nibima with the new discovery, he said, “You have to find someone who is on the Traditional Medicinal Plants Council and who has its products registered for advice. The medical herbalists will also make sure that you get the correct medications and dosages ”.
Criticizing the abuse of the Nibima plant with its discovery to potentially cure COVID-19, the doctor insisted, “Don’t go self-medicating. Right now the best you can do is get tested when you have symptoms of COVID-19 ”.
Dr Anthony Mensah made this known in an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show broadcast on e.TV Ghana and Happy FM.
The Food and Drugs Authority of Ghana (FDA), together with the National Medicines Regulatory Agency (NMRA), have approved a herbal medicine, Cryptolepis Sanguinolenta, known locally as Nibima, for testing clinics for the treatment of Covid-19.
In a statement released by the CEO of the FDA, said that the approval of herbal medicine follows laboratory studies conducted by the research team at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) which proves the efficacy of the drug against the novel coronavirus.
