Urgent investigation is needed to understand why alcohol deaths have reached record levels in England and Wales in the first nine months of 2020, experts have said.
Provisional data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) covers the period during and after the first foreclosure last year.1 These show that 5,460 alcohol-specific cause-related deaths were recorded between January and September 2020, an increase of 16.4% compared to the same nine-month period in 2019 (3,732 deaths). Three-quarters of these deaths (79.8%) were due to alcoholic liver disease.
