Jane Foster is the main character, not Odinson

Thor has been the God of Thunder since the beginning of the MCU, but with the return of Jane Foster, he will have some fierce competition.

Over the past decade, Chris Hemsworth has portrayed Thor, the Norse God of Thunder, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. however, Thor: love and thunder will feature the return of Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, who will become the Mighty Thor just like she did in the comics. Since he is no longer the only God of Thunder, the title of the fourth installment could refer to Jane’s Thor rather than the original Odinson.

In the source material, Thor Odinson became unworthy of Mjolnir as a result of the events of “original sin”. He left the hammer on the moon where he called out a new owner, Jane, although his identity was kept under wraps. After a while, the original Thor returned to claim Mjolnir before accepting that the hammer had a new owner. With his blessing, he gave it his own name as a title and began to simply use “Odinson”.

Jane Foster from Thor

We don’t know how much Thor: love and thunder will follow this scenario, but there will likely be some changes, especially considering that Mjolnir was destroyed in Thor: Ragnarok. After all, Marvel doesn’t generally make strictly faithful adaptations of its comics, letting them serve as more of an inspiration. No matter how or why Jane becomes the Goddess of Thunder, Thor probably won’t be too happy for someone else to take her name and title. Although he was surprised and even happy when Vision and Captain America wielded Mjolnir, neither of the heroes intended to take Thor’s place.

One possibility is that they could both be called Thor. In the comics, there are several characters who simultaneously shared coats, such as Clint Barton and Kate Bishop both referred to as Hawkeye, or Peter Parker and Miles Morales both passing through Spider-Man. Even so, that has yet to happen in the MCU, and it could be confusing to audiences. On the other hand, Thor could possibly give Jane permission to use her name and start with something else. If that ends up being the case then the mystery will be whether he becomes Odinson like in the comics or ends up with a new nickname.

Since Thor was still worthy of using Mjolnir in Avengers: Endgame, he might not want to take the same name as his outrageous comic book counterpart. In fact, in recently leaked set photos, some fans believe the God of Thunder could take over from another hero: Thunderstrike. In the photos, Hemsworth wears a more casual outfit, including jeans, a t-shirt and a red leather vest, which is reminiscent of the outfit worn by Eric Masterson in the comics.

Eric shares an interesting story with Thor. The two worked together on a construction site while the Norse god was disguised as a human. After going through several adventures together, Eric became the new God of Thunder when Thor was banished. After Thor’s return, Odin gave Eric an Asgardian mace called Thunderstrike and he became his own superhero. Since Masterson has yet to appear in the MCU, Thor may be the one to achieve mass and become the first on-screen Thunderstrike while Jane takes over as the main character.

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillen in Nebula and Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. The film hits theaters on May 6, 2022.
