Mister Sinister is one of the most dangerous members of the Silent Council. Master manipulator and evil genius, Sinister quietly plays his own game in the background of Krakoa, filling his gene banks with mutant DNA. He even quietly recruited mutants into his service such as Psylocke, holding his daughter’s fate over his head in exchange for her compliance.
But it looks like Sinister has grown a bit overconfident since he just let a minor mutant get the better of him in Hellions # 9.During a supposedly friendly conversation with the Silver Age villain Mastermind, Mister Sinister is caught off guard and betrayed, and this could create some serious trouble not just for the Hellions but for the X-Men. in their whole.

Mastermind appears to be one of the mutants that Mister Sinister has approached for a possible arrangement. Mastermind is still working with the Hellfire Club, albeit in its new form as the Hellfire Trading Corporation, but seems to have found an unlikely empathy with Sinister. Mastermind suggests that they both “bristle” against the lines drawn and the laws enforced by Krakoa. After some discussion, Mastermind seems to agree with Sinister’s plans and offers to work with him. But the Mastermind tea billed as a courtesy was a ruse and quickly turns out to be a poison strong enough to even affect Sinister. Mastermind just has to sit down and watch Sinister fall from his chair screaming in pain. The villain can only crawl a few meters before sinking into unconsciousness.
Sinister’s inability to see the betrayal coming means the Hellions must find their rebel leader, not just for their own good but for all of Krakoa. As a member of the Silent Council, Sinister’s kidnapping sets a terrible precedent that the island cannot ignore. The Hellions are gathered to hunt him down, but that only invites more trouble, as Mastermind takes the opportunity to deceive Sage and capture the Hellions as soon as they reach New York, handing them over to his benefactor, Arcade.
It comes across as a terrible Sinister mistake that could potentially endanger many lives. It’s not like Mastermind has a solid history of integrity. His role in stories like The Dark Phoenix Saga centered around subterfuge and manipulation. Since his restoration to life, his only notable act in helping Krakoa has taken part in the battle against the Cotati aliens during Empyre.
Mastermind didn’t even need his illusions to defeat Sinister, instead defeating the longtime opponent of the X-Men with a cup of poisoned tea. Sinister’s musky cloak even inadvertently helps hide any smell of poison. Unless all of this was a sham to find Arcade – which seems unlikely given the way Sinister is shown captured shortly thereafter – then the master manipulator just prepared for a major defeat.
Sinister’s mistake of dropping his guard around Mastermind for a moment, may now have put his entire team in hot water and set up Arcade to start a new campaign of terror against the X-Men.
