The Ashanti Regional Security Council (ARSC) would soon task police with spot checks on commercial vehicles to apprehend those on board without face masks.
“It is an offense to board a utility vehicle without a face mask,” the region’s designated minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, warned.
He advised commercial drivers not to allow passengers who were not wearing face masks to board their buses, adding that acting contrary to guidelines could result in punitive action against violators.
“We must be disciplined and respect the security protocols instituted by the government,” he told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi on the sidelines of the inauguration of some educational projects.
According to Mr. Osei-Mensah, citizens were also responsible for observing all other protocols such as regular hand washing with soap, social distancing and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers for their own safety and well-being.
Meanwhile, a total of 440 deaths and 6,086 active cases linked to Covid-19 had been recorded in the country as of February 5 of this year, according to the Ghana Health Service portal.
Mr. Osei-Mensah said that with Ashanti recording the second highest number of confirmed cases and behind Greater Accra, REGSEC is sparing no effort to get people to follow the protocols.
He further underscored the need for educational institutions and civil society to help campaign against the pandemic, noting that the new variant of Covid-19 as identified in some countries could be fatal.
