United States President Joe Biden sent his first message to the African Union on February 5 ahead of the 34th Leaders’ Summit later this month.
Biden addressed a number of issues ranging from the United States’ commitment to re-engage with its international partners multilaterally.
He referred to cooperation in the fields of diplomacy, security and climate, stressing that under his administration, America will be a partner, “in solidarity, support and mutual respect.
“We believe in the nations of Africa and in the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation on a continent-wide scale,” he added.
Transcription: Biden’s message to the African Union
Hello everybody,
I have the honor to send the best wishes to the people of the United States ahead of the 34th African Union Summit. This past year has shown us how interconnected the world is and how our destinies are linked.
This is why my administration is committed to rebuilding our partnerships around the world and to re-engage with international institutions like the African Union.
We must all work together to advance our shared vision for a better future. A future that advances growth and investment, that advances the prosperity of all our nations.
A future that advances the life of peace and security for all our citizens. A future determined to invest in our democratic institutions and promote the human rights of all people, women and girls, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities, and people of all ethnicities, religions and heritages.
To achieve this future, we must also face the serious challenges we face. This includes investing more in global health, defeating COVID-19 and working to prevent, detect and respond to future health crises, and partnering with the African CDC and other institutions to advance health security.
Raise our climate ambitions and ensure that developing countries can mitigate and adapt to climate impacts that are already causing pain.
And engage in sustained diplomacy in conjunction with the African Union to resolve the conflicts that claim lives across the African continent.
None of this will be easy, but the United States is now your partner, in solidarity, support and mutual respect. We believe in African nations and continent-wide entrepreneurship and innovation.
And through the challenges ahead, although they are great, there is no doubt that our nations, our peoples – the African Union, we are up to this task. I hope I can be with you next time in person, but I want to thank you. Thank you and God bless you all.
