Bolga East MP Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine said Asawase MP Muntaka Mubarak should have investigated the corruption allegations he made against a Supreme Court judge before delivering the same public.
The chief whip of the NDC Caucus in Parliament revealed on January 10, 2021 in an interview on JoyNews that the bribe attempt took place on the eve of the inauguration of the 8th legislature.
According to him, his colleague was led to vote for Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye for the presidency against Alban Bagbin of the NDC.
“Shamefully, a Supreme Court justice called a colleague to tell her what they would give her if she voted for Professor Mike Oquaye. He told her that they would help her take care of her children. She can get fuel at a gas station for free for the next four years.
“So we [NDC] will examine it. We will look at what time he made those calls, ”he told JoyNews’ Emefa Apawu.
However, after being convicted for his statements by the Ghana Bar Association as well as other members of the general public, Muntaka Mubarak recanted and apologized for his statement.
In his letter of recantation and apology, he said: “Based on good advice, I have also decided to let the sleeping dogs lie and will therefore refrain from any further public comment on the matter. which, as I have indicated, was initially brought to my attention by a female parliamentary colleague. ”
Referring to parts of Mr Mubarak’s letter, Dr Ayine said the statement was intended to calm nerves and ensure that the relationship between the judiciary and the legislature is not broken.
“I don’t want any public comment that will ultimately undermine the reason the statement was released,” he added.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Dr Ayine said if the case had been seriously pursued it would have led to various public inquiries which would have damaged relations between the legislature and the judiciary.
He also said that when Mubarak received the report that a Supreme Court judge was trying to bribe an MP, he should have done the necessary checks before going public.
“Now, should he have made it public before investigating its veracity or otherwise, he didn’t do it before he made it public and I think that’s where he went wrong.” If he had investigated, he would have discovered that maybe the person who made the appeal was not a Supreme Court judge after all or that he was simply claiming to be a Supreme Court justice.
He further revealed that the NDC had opened an investigation into the allegation but would not make its findings public.
“We actually went to MTN, got the numbers and the calls that went to them, we traced them, and so on.”
