The ambulance driver who was shot dead by armed thieves while transporting a pregnant woman in labor died at Korle-bu University Hospital in Accra.

Senior emergency medical technician Abraham Tetteh died on Saturday morning upon admission.

He had been shot in the eye.

The late Abraham Tetteh was Yilo Krobo’s municipal officer in charge of the National Ambulance Service.

It will be recalled that on Friday, Mr. Tetteh was transporting a pregnant woman from Akuse government hospital to Koforidua regional hospital when her van was attacked by highway thieves.

The driver and the pregnant woman were then taken to hospital after being rescued by a police patrol team.

Giving details of the attack, the deputy regional administrative director of the East for the National Ambulance Service, Felix Owusu, said around 1:30 a.m. that the team encountered 8 armed robbers in Abebease.

According to him, the thieves, seeing the ambulance with the siren of the headlights, thought it was the police.

This sparked the shooting, which resulted in injuries to the driver.

He added that the thieves also extorted money from the occupants of the ambulance.
