A section of the Cape Coast-Fosu-Kumasi highway collapsed in Atonsu, near Assin Fosu, in the central municipality of Assin, in the central region.
The situation makes it difficult for vehicles to move around.
Residents said this section of the road had been showing cracks, a sign of a possible collapse, for a few years now.
The Ghanaian news agency observed that a tunnel, in which a nearby stream flows into an open drain under the road, was affected by the damage, making the ground soggy.
The situation forced drivers on the road to take only one lane, which created heavy traffic.
This left many heavy goods vehicles on the Cape Coast – Côte d’Ivoire road stranded.
Mr Nicholas Fiifi Baako, director general of the municipality, in an interview with the GNA, assured residents and commuters of the Assembly’s determination to resolve the problem to facilitate traffic.
Mr. Samuel Akuoko, central regional director of the Ministry of Roads and Highways, said some road contractors would soon be hired to repair the road.
“We are in talks with the contractor working on the Adiembra road and he has promised to mobilize his men on the site to have the broken bridge repaired. If that doesn’t work, we’ll get another contractor to fix it right away, ”he said. .
