Some Ghanaians often patronize products based on the big ads
Some traders in the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra expressed optimism on Monday that the herbal preparation Nibima will be in clinical trial for the treatment of COVID-19.
The herbal medicine Cryptolepis Sanguinolenta, known locally as Nibima, was recently approved by the Ghana Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for clinical trials for the treatment of COVID-19.
During a Ghana News Agency (GNA) visit to some herbal wholesale and retail stores in Okaishie Drug Lane and the Accra CBD, traders expressed confidence that the product would be the preferred option of many.
Mr. Meshack Abeka, Director of Sales, Angel Herbal, said demand for the product will be a “hot cake,” adding that he foresees the possibility of a rush once FDA approved for the treatment of COVID- 19.
“Some Ghanaians often patronize products based on big advertisements but not necessarily on their effectiveness,” he said.
He also praised the FDA, which occasionally visits herbal stores to select certain products and re-examine their effectiveness to ensure that most of these stores maintain approved standards.
He claimed that some producers present the right samples to the authorities for approval but subsequently, for financial reasons, they lower the standards of mass production, which they push in the market.
Another Okaishie trader told GNA that herbal medicine would be preferred over other vaccines to cure COVID-19 according to traditional belief and standards, herbal medicines are the best and have the power to cure several ailments.
Madam Mary Owusu, a trader at CBD Accra, said that if the herb had been approved, the cost element would play a major role in her patronage as it would be affordable, “apart from affordability the accessibility would also play an essential role.
“Personally, I’m going to make my family drink it every morning and every night to avoid contracting the disease.”
Mr. Isaac Obiri, Sales Manager of Kof-Sam Herbal, said: “We are waiting for the product, after the test we will stock our stores to make sure the Ghanaians who need it get it.”
Ms. Joyce Kpentey, Director of Sales, Kingswalk Herbal, assesses business value, said: “If it is finally approved it would create a new value chain in herbal medicine, it will create jobs and more people will generate income along the way. of the value chain ”.
The herbal malaria drug Nibima developed in Ghana by the Center for Plant Medicine Research in Mampong-Akuapim, which was submitted by researchers from the School of Public Health at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology ( KNUST) for a clinical trial for the treatment of COVID -19 was granted in January 2021 by the FDA.
