London [UK], February 9 (ANI): About 1 in 3 patients (35%) of patients with Covid-19 put on a ventilator with “extensive symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)” after treatment, results show ‘new research in the UK.
According to CNN, research conducted by Imperial College London and the University of Southampton published on Tuesday also said that PTSD symptoms such as “intrusive pictures” of the intensive care environment were reported in 18% of patients. hospitalized patients without the need for a ventilator.
The study was conducted in May 2020 when researchers investigated the symptoms of PTSD in more than 13,000 patients with confirmed or suspected COVID-19.
Lower levels of widespread PTSD symptoms in patients receiving medical help at home (16%) and patients who did not need help at home but had breathing problems (11%), according to the report .
The study found that the most common symptom of PTSD in patients with Covid-19 were intrusive pictures, sometimes referred to as ‘flashbacks’. For example, these could be intrusive images of the environment in the intensive care unit, doctors in the intensive care unit wearing full PPE, or other patients in the intensive care unit.
“More than 400,000 patients have been hospitalized with Covid in the UK and unfortunately there will be more to come. Many of those fortunate enough to survive their ordeal will experience a significant impact on their mental health, ”Dr Adrian James, president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said as quoted by CNN.
“Effective and integrated follow-up care must be provided after discharge, and mental health services must be extensive enough to treat an increasing number of people with symptoms of PTSD,” added James. (ANI)
