Ghana Health Service Director General Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye revealed that 23 schools in the Greater Accra region have recorded active cases of Covid-19.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, he said out of 166 suspected cases, a total of 39 students have tested positive for the deadly coronavirus.

He further added that 12 teachers and 4 non-teaching staff from different schools have also been registered with the virus, bringing the active cases in schools in Greater Accra to 55.

So far, no recovery or death has been recorded.

“23 schools in Greater Accra have so far reported 56 cases and no deaths. And I must say that parents are duly informed, ”said Dr Kuma Aboagye.

Following the reopening of schools, the Ghana health service announced that high schools were producing the highest number of cases of Covid-19.

Currently, the high schools with the largest hot spots are found in the Haut-Ouest, Ouest, Greater Accra and Est regions.

Recently, the executive director of the National School Inspection Authority (NaSIA) revealed that 37 more cases of Covid-19 have been recorded at Akosombo International School in the eastern region.

As of January 28, 2021, a total of 553 samples have been tested with 82 positives. The cases consisted of 73 students and 9 staff.

On January 31, 2021, a total of 55 samples were collected from the students and tested with 13 confirmed positive.

Mr. Kuma Aboagye, however, assured parents that the Covid-19 epidemic in schools was being handled in accordance with state-instituted safety protocols.

“The national and regional team visited the school, made our assessment, given our recommendation on how to improve social distance between other safety protocols to reduce the spread.

“All are well and isolated and those in close contact are still being watched so that we can contain the spread,” he noted.
