At least 17 parliamentarians and 151 support staff have been infected with the coronavirus, which has already forced lawmakers to limit their assembly meetings.
The president of the house, Alban Bagbin, announced on Tuesday that the legislature would be in suspension until March 2 to make way for “the disinfection and sanitation of the premises”.
“I have, in consultation with the leadership, decided that the sitting of the House will be adjourned for three weeks,” Bagbin said, adding that the parliamentary nominations committee will continue to meet to consider the ministerial appointments of President Nana Akufo. -Addo, who was elected in December.
The West African country has reported 73,003 coronavirus cases, including 482 deaths, since the start of the pandemic.
Large social gatherings such as funerals, weddings and parties are prohibited and the country’s land and sea borders have remained closed to human trafficking since March 2020 while beaches, nightclubs, cinemas and pubs remain closed .
Last month, Ghanaian soldiers were forced to intervene in parliament to quell a clash between opposing parties in chaotic scenes during the presidential vote.
The new Parliament is divided in the middle between the two main parties, which presents a risk of political blockage.
