Dr Emmanuel Ahiable, head of Covid-19 case management at Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge), said Ghana will likely register more cases of non-infectious diseases due to post-Covid-19 complications .
He therefore stressed the need for health workers specializing in noncommunicable diseases to be ready to help people who develop complications after recovering from the viral infection.
Dr Ahiable, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said some research has shown that severe Covid-19 infections cause epileptic seizures and temporary paralysis and encourage recovered patients to seek appropriate medical care for complications they developed after recovery to avoid death.
He noted that three patients who recovered from critical to severe Covid-19 infections at the Ridge Covid-19 intensive care unit had died after returning to the facility with a complication of difficulty breathing, one of whom is currently with the complication, on a single mechanical ventilator.
“People are dying more now, not from the viral infection, but from post-Covid-19 complications,” added the head of Covid-19 case management.
Dr Ahiable said severe coronavirus infections have caused lasting damage to the lungs, heart, brain and are creating a blood clot in the body, which must attract the attention of specialists.
He said it also affects the functionality of the liver and kidneys, causing mood swings and constant fatigue in a recovered patient, all after complications from Covid-19.
Dr Ahiable said the other complications were stroke, diabetes, difficulty breathing and high blood pressure, adding that the virus can also create scarring in the lungs leading to long-term breathing problem and fatigue. .
He said it was also discovered that “Neuro Covid” can affect the brain, making it foggy and subsequently causing memory loss.
“At Ridge, for example, we had a case where a recovered patient developed diabetes as a complication post-infection with Covid-19. We have also seen cases where two people developed a stroke after their recovery, ”said the person in charge of the management of cases of Covid-19.
Dr Ahiable therefore stressed the importance of observing social distancing, frequently washing your hands with soap under running water and wearing nasal masks.
The country’s latest update on the Ghana Health Service (GHS) website says it has recorded 6,352 active cases with 464 deaths, 64,658 recoveries out of the 71,533 infections recorded to date.
Coronaviruses are said to be a large group of viruses common in animals. In rare cases, they’re what scientists call zoonotics – they can be passed from animals to humans, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
They are said to cause dangerous diseases with an incubation period of 3 to 14 days. The signs and symptoms are; fever, runny nose, body aches, sore throat and possibly headache.
