The Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) said it had closed an anonymous testing center in the capital, Abuja, which issued fake Covid-19 certificates to travelers.
Chikwe Ihekweazu, the chief executive of NCDC, said he found evidence that the lab collected samples and money from unsuspecting travelers, but did not test them.
Instead, they issued certificates claiming they had tested negative for the virus, allowing them to travel.
Mr Ihekweazu added during the organization’s weekly briefing on Monday that a full list of accredited labs was available on the NCDC website and urged members of the public to get tested only at these centers.
He said they were working on a platform where every lab in Nigeria could publish the results of their tests which could then be easily verified by airlines or other countries wishing to verify whether a result was genuine.
He did not specify when this platform would be ready.
Nigerian authorities recently suspended Emirates airline flights because the carrier wanted passengers from Nigeria to undergo a rapid Covid-19 test four hours before the flight, in addition to the standard polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. .
