Kan Dapaah justifies military protection of public officials

The designated Minister of National Security, Albert Kan Dapaah, justified the deployment of Ghanaian armed forces officers as security details for some public officials.

According to him, the development where some ministers of state and heads of state agencies are protected by military personnel instead of police administration is crucial.

He made the comments during his session before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Wednesday.

He is one of more than 40 sector and regional ministers appointed by President Akufo-Addo for his second term.

Speaking to the verification panel, Mr. Kan Dapaah explained that decisions are made when information indicates that “a particular individual has a problem and people have it after their life, and we believe there is. a danger.

“Anywhere you’ve seen soldiers having to protect a certain person, it’s because according to our assessment, in the assessment of security experts, there is a need for such support to be given to that particular person.

He further indicated that Ghana’s police services, responsible for facilitating internal security, are sometimes not up to the task when it comes to the level of security equipment required for specific cases, justifying the employment of military personnel.

“Obviously, the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies, in terms of equipment and men, have never had the full complement of what it takes to provide the most effective policing in the country. country ”, he answered a supplementary question by Haruna Iddrisu, leader of the minority.

Mr. Kan Dapaah also said that this security support is not limited to ministers and other high-level members of society.

“I know of a journalist to whom we continue to provide security coverage and security support,” he added.

The designated minister was appointed for the same portfolio he held in the last administration.
