Foreign Minister designate Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey said Ghana needs to enter into a formal agreement with countries whose citizens are domestic workers.
Speaking during her review so far, she said the deal will help the country monitor the activities of these workers and ensure they are free from abuse and exploitation. .
“There is a clandestine operation underway in all our regions, recruiting young girls under the pretext of taking them to teach. But they arrive at their destination only to find that they are in slavery. “
Ms Ayorkor Botchwey said her office has worked to ensure that the activities of those who recruit and exploit young women are prohibited.
However, after the phenomenon continues, she believes that the agreement with other countries will be a safer way to ensure the safety of young domestic workers.
“It is important for us, like other countries, to have formal agreements in which we regulate and know who leaves, how many years they stay and after 2 years they have to leave.”
“If they want to go back, they come back. We have signed such an agreement with the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. It remains for both parties to sit down and make it operational. But I suggest that we have these arrangements with all the countries where these young people are received ”, added Ayorkor Botchway.
She also called for the regularization of agents. She explained that they should be registered so that the country can hold them accountable for any incident that occurs.
Ms Ayorkor Botchwey also urged young people interested in domestic work in some of these countries to wait for the ministry to regularize this practice.
She said it would help them protect them from torture or exploitation in their search for greener pastures.
