A second person has died from Ebola in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo following a resurgence of the disease, three months after authorities declared the end of the country’s latest outbreak, said Thursday WHO.
The second victim was a 60-year-old farm worker who died on Wednesday, the national office of the World Health Organization said.
The woman was linked to the first death in Biena health zone in North Kivu province, he added.
This first case involved a woman, the wife of an Ebola survivor, who died on February 3.
The WHO Africa office said at the time that the first victim died in an area that was previously one of the epicenters of the last outbreak, near the town of Butembo.
Since the 2013-16 Ebola crisis in West Africa – which killed 11,300 across the region – the WHO has watched each new outbreak with great concern, treating the latest Congolese outbreak as an international health emergency .
DR Congo said on Nov. 18 that the epidemic, which had lasted nearly six months in the northwestern province of Equateur, was over. It was the eleventh Ebola outbreak in the country, killing 55 out of 130 cases.
The last person declared cured of Ebola in Ecuador was on October 16.
The widespread use of vaccinations, which have been administered to more than 40,000 people, has helped curb the disease.
The return of the virus to the northeast of the country – a region plagued by violence between armed groups – comes as the vast African country also battles its own Covid-19 epidemic, with 681 dead to date.
