A 65-year-old teacher and former director of the Bagabaga College of Education in the Municipality of Sagnarigu in the Northern Region, Alhaji Adam Zakaria was elected representative of the Savannah region on the State Council.
Alhaji Zakaria, a teacher by profession who retired as Director 2 of the Ghana Education Service (GES) today had the 14 members of the Electoral College vote to represent the region on the State Council.
Its two main contenders, Jawula Muhamadu Nurudeen, 71, a traditional ruler and farmer, and Mohammed Adam Abdul, 46, a speaker, did not vote in the contest, while a third person, Mohammed Tohir, 42, and a regional director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) withdrew from the poll.
The election in the region was peaceful and overseen by the regional leadership of the Electoral Commission (EC) headed by its regional director, Mr Johnson Akafia.

Alhaji Zakaria, born in Bole in Maluwewura Zakaria from Bole and Mantewuche Achulo from Buipe attended primary and middle schools in Bole LA, Bawku High School, Bagabaga College and the University of Cape Coast where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in mathematics (upper second class) and later, a master’s degree in management.
He has taught as a professional teacher at Mole L / A. Primary (Damongo), Bagabaga College (Tamale), Alfata Institute (Libya), Accra Academy (Accra), Butterworth College (South Africa) and has retired compulsory as Director of Bagabaga College in December 2015 at the rank of Director 2 of Ghana Education Service.
Other positions he has held outside of his profession include National Secretary of Gonjaland Youth Association, Chairman of Bole District Assembly, Board Member of Ghana Electricity Company , Bui Power Authority Board Member, Regional Executive (NPP) (N / R) Chairman of NPP Finance Committee (N / R), Chairman of NPP Discipline Committee (N / R), NPP Council Member of (N / R), Chairman of the NPP Alumni Council (Savannah Region) and Chairman of the NPP 2020 Election Advisory Board Committee (Savannah Region).
