Dr George Benneh, professor emeritus and former vice-chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon, is reportedly dead.

He would have died “peacefully” at his residence in East Legon on Thursday, February 11, 2021, at the age of 87.

A family spokesperson confirmed the news to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and said funeral arrangements would be announced later.

Professor Benneh was Minister of State in the Supreme Military Council regime (2), the Revolutionary Council of the Armed Forces regime and in the 3rd Republic.

He has held portfolios including land and natural resources, fuel and electricity and served as finance minister in the Limann government.

Professor Benneh was awarded the “Star of the Volta” by President Kuffuor.

He was also a papal knight of the Catholic Church.

Professor Benneh, born March 6, 1934 in Jamdede, Berekum, Bono region, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Adelaide Mary Benneh, six children and several grandchildren.

He was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon, from 1992 to 1996.

Professor Benneh was a professor and later professor emeritus of geography and resource development at the same university.

He was predeceased by Prof. Akilakpa Sawyerr and succeeded by Prof. Ivan Addae Mensah, University of Ghana.
