Presidential Energy Department candidate Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has apologized to former President John Dramani Mahama for accusing him of driving buses and paying people to travel to the place of independence.
The minister-designate had said in 2019 that the ex-president explained why some parents would have passed out in the place where parents and their wards had gathered to protest against the national placements of high school students, demanding redress for a number of issues .
But, during his consideration in parliament by the nominations committee, Tamale Sud MP Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini asked him to verify or not whether these statements he had made were true.
The candidate replied “no”, to which the Committee member asked for an apology.
Suhuyini: Can the candidate prove to this committee that ex-president Mahama bused people to Independence Square and paid them to do a false collapse during the SHS placement? ?
Opoku-Prempeh: No, I can’t.
Suhuyini: So does the candidate think that in his inability to prove this before this honorable committee, he owes the ex-president an apology?
Opoku-Prempeh: No, I don’t. Mr. Chairman, I said I would use different words and I regret that.
Ranking committee member Haruna Iddrisu then steps in to urge the candidate to do the right thing.
Haruna: Honorable nominee, you see, just step back and apologize if you can’t prove it, then we move on.
Opoku-Prempeh: Honorable member, you asked me to do something and I did. If these words I have used hurt her, I will step aside and apologize to her.
