A dream match between CM Punk and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin never happened in WWE although it was sometimes teased, but Punk has a good idea of how this match would have gone.
During a question-and-answer session on Twitter on Friday, Punk was asked to comment on a game against Austin if it had happened. In response, Punk replied: “It would have been short. GTS, 1 2 3. “
Although Punk hasn’t played a game since the 2014 Royal Rumble, it’s clear that professional wrestling still runs through his veins based on his response.
In fact, an Austin vs.Punk match would likely have been one of the greatest angles and fights in WWE history for several reasons. Punk and Austin are known for their sharp-tongued promotional ability, but Punk is straight, while The Texas Rattlesnake is famous for beating beers while celebrating their victories.
WWE even played on this fact during a backstage interaction between Punk and Austin on a 2011 episode of Raw.
The following year, Punk and Austin participated in an interview segment with Jim Ross to hype the WWE ’13 video game.
Either way, there was electricity in the air, and it was obvious that a true rivalry between Punk and Austin would have been something special. It would also have marked Austin’s long-awaited return to action following his retirement from WrestleMania 19.
In the end, the match never happened, as Punk left wrestling in 2014 and Austin remained in retirement. With Punk not pushing for a wrestling return and Austin, 56, apparently happy to retire, the match is unlikely to ever happen.
Instead, fans will wonder what could have been if two of the greatest speakers and characters in WWE history had their horns locked in the square circle.
