WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Daimler AG’s U.S. unit Mercedes-Benz USA on Saturday said it was recalling 1.29 million vehicles sold since 2016 because the software may not communicate the correct location of the vehicle in the event accident.

The recall covers certain 2016-2021 model years CLA-Class, GLA-Class, GLE-Class, GLS-Class, SLC-Class, A-Class, GT-Class, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, CLS -Class, SL-Class, Class B, Class GLB, Class GLC, and Class G, according to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The German automaker plans to release a software update that will be installed by dealerships or over the air.

Mercedes-Benz USA said on Saturday that it was not aware of any cases of property damage or personal injury related to the issue.

The automaker said “a temporary collapse of power to the communications module caused by an accident could lead to vehicle position error during a potential emergency call. Mercedes-Benz added that “the other functions of the automatic and manual emergency call function remain fully operational”.

Mercedes-Benz in Europe launched an investigation in October 2019 based on a report from the Mercedes-Benz single-instance eCall Center in the European market where the automatic eCall system was relaying an inaccurate position of the vehicle.

After a lengthy investigation examining various software combinations of the communication module, the company’s research revealed other similar events in which the transmitted vehicle position was incorrect.
