The Esiama Divisional Police Command in the Ellembelle District successfully thwarted an attempted robbery against the Esiama branch of Ecobank in the Western Region.
Police said they received a distress call in the wee hours of Saturday indicating that about five people had attacked the bank.
The police then went to the scene. But after seeing the staff, the thieves opened fire which the response team returned as a result, leading the thieves to flee into a nearby bush.
Police rescued the man from the bank’s private security and another who was on duty in an adjacent ECG office. Their hands and legs were tied with ropes.
While inspecting the scene, police selected an AK 47 assault rifle with a tempered serial number and 28 rounds of live ammunition. Other salvaged items included an industrial cutter, crowbar, screwdrivers, damaged padlocks, and four used BB shells.
Police also found that armed thieves damaged the burglar-proof door and the glass door leading to the banking hall.
Even though the thieves had access to the banking room, they were unsuccessful in their operation due to the timely intervention of the police.
Meanwhile, a search was organized to arrest the perpetrators.
“We urge residents of Esiama and surrounding villages to report suspicious figures, especially those with gunshot wounds to hospitals, clinics and herbalists for treatment,” the police statement said.
